New Carbon Kinetic Drive vs goal posing - what's the difference? 1 month 3 weeks ago #603

We recently introduced a new art-direction feature - Carbon Kinetic Drive.
At first glance you might ask why, since it seems a similar feature to goal posing - but they are rather different.
The major difference is that goal pose constrains positions while kinetic drive affects velocities.

You want to use goal posing when the animated soft body aims at achieving a specific pose / animation. It might fail under external constraints, but it always aims at the goal pose in terms of position. A good example is when iterating over an existing animation by adding a collision event or by adding inertial effects to make the physics more realistic. Another example would be to make an animated object deformable.

You want to use kinetic drive when the relative velocity between an object and the soft body matters more than the relative position between the 2 of them. Kinetic drive does not enforce a pose, so the objects' related position can drift over time. Using kinetic drive is more about preventing a fast acceleration between an object and the soft body resulting in latency and distortions. A good example is to control a cape from wrapping around a fast spinning character. Or to control the sleeves from a garment to lag and deform by collision impact while the arms of a character are moving up and down very fast.

Nothing prevents you from using both at the same time to achieve a control in position and to prevent large relative velocities building up.
